JEWELRY CARE

How to care for your Dara Kaye Jewelry:

- Remove before exercising, swimming, bathing and sleeping.

- Limit your jewelry’s exposure to extreme temperatures, perfumes and cosmetics.

- Avoid contact with harsh chemicals or household cleaning products.

- Keep your jewelry away from perfumes, lotions, skincare products, cosmetics and chemicals which can damage the gold or cloud diamonds.

- Store flat in a safe, cool  and dry environment, each piece separated from others to avoid scratches.

- Clean lab grown diamonds with care using warm water, a drop of dish soap, and a soft bristle. Rinse with cold water. Do not use steam cleaners, harsh chemical cleaners or ultrasonic cleaners with colored stones.

Lab Grown Emerald Care:

Emeralds are among the most delicate stones in fine jewelry. Although they are reasonably hard, they are unusually brittle, meaning they resist scratching but chip, crack, and fracture far more easily than diamonds, sapphires, or rubies. Heat, chemicals, sudden temperature changes, and impact are all capable of damaging an emerald, even one set securely in gold. Treating your emeralds gently is essential to preserving their color, clarity, and structure. To keep your lab-grown emeralds in pristine condition, follow these care tips closely.

Everyday wear

  • Follow the "last on, first off" rule: put your emerald jewelry on after applying perfume, lotion, hairspray, sunscreen, and cosmetics — and take it off first when you get home.
  • Remove your emeralds before showering, swimming, bathing, exercising, or sleeping. Chlorine, salt water, sweat, and soap can all damage the stone over time.
  • Take emeralds off before any task involving chemicals or impact, including household cleaning, dishwashing, gardening, and manual labor.
  • Never soak emerald jewelry in any liquid.

What to avoid

  • All harsh chemicals, including household cleaners, bleach, chlorine, ultrasonic cleaning solutions, and harsh detergents — these can damage the surface and color of the stone, and can strip protective treatments (see below).
  • Perfumes, lotions, skincare products, sunscreens, and cosmetics, which can dull the surface and shift the color over time.
  • Commercial jewelry cleaning solutions of any kind — they are not safe for emeralds.
  • Ultrasonic cleaners and steam cleaners. The vibration and heat can crack the stone.
  • Sudden temperature changes (for example, going from a hot shower into cold air, or running hot water over a cold stone). These shifts can cause invisible fractures that worsen over time.
  • Avoid extended direct sunlight, which can fade or discolor the stone.

Cleaning at home

  • For routine cleaning, gently wipe the stone and setting with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove surface dust and oils.
  • If a deeper cleaning is needed, use a barely damp soft cloth, never submerge or soak the piece — and dry it thoroughly with a clean lint-free cloth immediately after.

Storage

  • Store your emeralds in a soft pouch or in a jewelry box with individual compartments. Emeralds should never be stored loose alongside other pieces,  diamonds and other harder stones will scratch them on contact.
  • Store flat, in a cool, dry environment, out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources.

A note on emerald treatments

Many emeralds, both lab-grown and mined, are treated with oil or resin to enhance clarity and protect natural inclusions. These treatments can break down over time, and especially with exposure to solvents, heat, ultrasonic cleaners, and harsh detergents. You must avoid exposing your emeralds to harsh chemicals, including household cleaners, lotions and perfumes, as these substances can damage the stone’s surface and color.
